Happy weekend ladies!!

I don’t know about your area, but here in SoCal, there is no sign of Fall. It’s hot and sticky and it’s supposed to be in the 90s this weekend! Ugh. No wonder the dog is walking slow. No wonder my hair is frizzy and limp. No wonder I am sweating like a farmer during harvest. But enough about that.

Recently, I went to my niece’s birthday party. Although she is only 9, she is quite sophisticated (as so many kids these days are), so she requested a sushi-themed party! Sushi??!! What happened to peanut butter and jelly or a pizza party? My, how she has grown.

I had never been to a sushi-making party. I remember they were big back in the 90s and even my roommate back in New York had become obsessed with making her own sushi. I thought to myself – “What’s the point?” Oh how wrong I was!! It’s a blast!!

The hardest part, I think, is making the rice just sticky enough. My sister did an amazing job and it actually turned out kind of sweet, which I liked. Some sushi snobs may have said it wasn’t perfect but screw them. Of course, cutting up all the stuff like avocado, fish, cucumber, mango, etc. can be time-consuming, but it is well worth it. We put all the stuff out and the kids went crazy. I tried to act all cool, like “Oh yeah, no big deal, let’s make sushi.” But inside I was like “This f-in rocks!!”

You can get the supplies online, or google to find a local Japanese market. I bet even your local fish place would probably have sushi-grade fish. Here’s a good resource:

And you know as well as I do, that something you make yourself ALWAYS tastes better. And boy was that sushi GOOD!

I also have a tradition that I get the birthday cake for my niece every year, since she was 1 years old! In L.A., I used to go to Hansen’s because they were the best, but they are also crazy expensive. Now that I live in the OC, I have found the gem of all bakeries – THE GREAT DANE BAKING COMPANY. They are, in a word, UNBELIEVABLE!! Check out the sushi cake they made for my niece!

Elaborate, creative, jaw-dropping, and everything was edible (except for the chopsticks). They have a large variety of flavors and their cakes taste delicious! Best of all, they are completely reasonably priced.

The birthday girl – my gorgeous niece in character!

So ladies, if you’re sick of the same old dinner or cocktail party, go get some sushi supplies and gather your friends and have fun! It will totally make them creative and working with your hands always brings the kid out. And hey, if a group of 9 year olds can make sushi, so can you!!!
