Happy Day after 4th of July Patriotic Ladies!
Okay okay. I admit it, I was a grump yesterday and very “boo hiss” about the 4th. Perhaps it was the annoying fireworks that idiot neighbors were setting off on our street starting Friday night. Perhaps it was the crazy party we biked by with so many drunk idiots on Friday night. I don’t know. But I definitely wasn’t in the spirit…until yesterday.
We went down to the Huntington Beach parade and just seeing all the families and cute kids, all out in full force to cheer on the parade participants was enough to make me question “Why wasn’t I into this??!!”. There was everything represented – the Coast Guard, the Fire Department, the Surfrider Foundation (yeah clean beaches!), the Girl Scouts, the Cub Scouts, a Martial Arts company, high school bands and cheer teams, AND all the military groups. It made me so happy to see such diversity and happy to live in this country.
I have to say that I normally think of Memorial Day as the parade to commemorate all those in armed forces who fought for this country. But seeing all of them today, going back to the Sons of the American Revolution (my hubby is a member) with uniforms from waaaay back when – well, it just got to me. It was cool. It was a walking history, right there in front of me. I am lucky that I don’t have anyone in war, and never had. My grandfather and my father both served in the Navy but to me, it is a distant story, not reality. And that is not good.
So, today I say to you “My Bad!” and take the time to think about all of those who are in the armed forces and also to think about our country’s history – don’t worry – it is the 150th anniversary and there will be PLENTY of Hollywood movies about Lincoln and America’s history. Usually I detest when Hollywood takes advantage of news to make a movie. Like a movie about Larry Flynt’s life, or the Lizzie Borden story that Chloe Sevigny is working on (eew yuck). But with this historical event, I don’t mind. Go ahead Hollywood – make your movies. Maybe our young kids (and older) will actually learn something!!
JULY 4th – just so you know:
THIS DAY IN HISTORY: On July 4th, 1776, In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the Continental Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence, which proclaims the independence of the United States of America from Great Britain and its king. The declaration came 442 days after the first volleys of the American Revolution were fired at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts and marked an ideological expansion of the conflict that would eventually encourage France’s intervention on behalf of the Patriots.
I decided to do something to show my respect so I went on the Wounded Warrior site and made a donation. I liked what they said about the 4th:
Too many Americans go through this patriotic holiday without giving a second thought to those who paid a high price for the freedom we celebrate today. (I agree, I was one of them).

Here’s to the freedom to speak our mind and know and be able to admit when we are wrong.
